A clear French rental brief gives three things: the type of home you want, your monthly maximum and the area you prefer. After an agent suggests a place, ask for the missing details before deciding whether it fits.
Practise the four complete lines from Parle’s Find a home dialogue. Then use one separate question model from Describe your home. The homes, budget and places are fictional language examples. This guide teaches the exchange rather than rental prices or procedures.
The first dialogue gives the renter’s budget and the agent’s location. It does not give the studio’s rent. Keep the two sides separate as you listen and reply.

Separate French question model · from Describe your home
Il y a combien de pièces ?
English meaning: How many rooms are there?
This question comes from another task in the same unit. It is not a fifth line of the agency dialogue. No answer about the offered studio is supplied here.
Native Pause keeps your place. Closing a card rewinds its audio; starting another stops and rewinds the previous clip. The checks assess the two selected meanings. They do not record or evaluate your speech, save App progress or complete a rental transaction.
Build your own three-part rental brief
Use a housing type, monthly maximum and preferred area. These variations are written-only: the five players above continue to play their original lines.
| Written French choice | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Type: un appartement / un studio | an apartment / a studio |
| Area: au centre-ville / dans un quartier calme | in the city center / in a quiet neighborhood |
| Ceiling: Mon budget est de 700 euros maximum par mois, charges comprises. | My budget is a maximum of 700 euros per month, including charges. |
Say Je cherche, then choose a complete type and area phrase. Keep un with the type: Je cherche un appartement au centre-ville. With a different area, use Je cherche un studio dans un quartier calme. The place phrase changes from au to dans un with those choices.
For one fictional transfer, imagine that you want a studio in a quiet neighborhood with a monthly ceiling of 900 euros including charges. Your written model is:
Je cherche un studio dans un quartier calme. Mon budget est de 900 euros maximum par mois, charges comprises.
It means “I am looking for a studio in a quiet neighborhood. My budget is a maximum of 900 euros per month, including charges.” It changes the request; it does not change the original 700-euro recording or the agent’s offer.
Ask for the details before accepting the offer
The renter has not yet stated a preferred area in the original four lines. The agent names the city center, which you still need to compare with your own preference. Studio is not automatically incompatible with appartement; the offer needs more details before you judge it.
You can also rehearse these written-only follow-ups:
| What is missing? | Written French question | English meaning |
|---|---|---|
| The offered home’s monthly rent, including charges | Quel est le loyer par mois, charges comprises ? | What is the monthly rent, including charges? |
| Which charges are included | Quelles charges sont comprises ? | Which charges are included? |
Charges comprises does not tell you which charges or utilities are covered by a particular offer. Combien de pièces does not specify how an actual listing counts rooms. In this exercise those details remain unknown; asking the question does not invent an answer.
Hide the models and ask a partner to play the agent. Give all three requirements, then ask the room question. The partner can check whether your request is complete and whether you have treated unknown offer details as known facts.
Continue with Parle’s current housing task
The current Find a home role-play asks for your type of home, budget and desired neighborhood. In the App, use Course → A2.1 → Housing and neighborhood → Find a home. The separate Describe your home task supplies the original room-question model.
This webpage is free. The App’s Housing and neighborhood unit is Premium. All 35 Sounds and the first four First Contact missions are free; Premium opens the current 120-mission course. Web practice does not mark a recorded App mission complete.
For a different accommodation task, checking into a hotel uses a reservation and a guest name. Keep that short-stay conversation separate from this rental brief. For another practical speaking situation, try giving a work progress update.
