Lost Your Student Card? Ask and Follow Up in French

Practise two French student-card conversations with eight whole audio models. Explain the loss, request a replacement and check fees, payment and readiness.

Quick answer: To explain a lost student card in French, say Bonjour, j’ai perdu ma carte d’étudiant. If the officer offers a replacement with Vous voulez un duplicata ?, Oui, s’il vous plaît requests it in that context. Y a-t-il des frais pour le duplicata ? asks about a fee. Vous recevrez un message quand la carte sera prête promises a message when the card is ready; this reply gives no number of days.

Explain the loss, request a replacement and follow up

  1. Explain the fictional student-card loss before revealing the model.
  2. Hear the officer’s replacement offer, then give your reply.
  3. Practise the separate fee and payment exchange.
  4. Ask about processing time and identify what the reply actually promises.
  5. Hide the models and repeat with a partner.

To explain a lost student card in French, name what you lost, respond to the replacement offer and ask for the details you still need. A reply about a readiness message can help you follow up, while leaving the processing time unknown.

This exercise uses two separate scenes from Parle’s Study and administration unit. First, a student explains the loss and requests a replacement in response to an officer’s offer. In the second scene, the student asks about fees and processing time. Each scene has four complete original lines.

The card, office and procedure are fictional language practice. For an actual replacement, use your own institution’s instructions. Keep its fees, documents and timing separate from the examples here.

Practise scene 1: explain the loss and request a replacement

The audio models use synthetic voices generated for Parle through the OpenAI speech service. This guide was prepared with AI assistance. Each player contains one complete original course line.

Your first speaking turn: greet the officer and explain that you have lost your student card. Try the sentence before opening the first student model.

Reveal the student’s lost-card explanation after your attempt

French explanation · Student

Bonjour, j'ai perdu ma carte d'étudiant.

English meaning: Hello, I lost my student card.

Hear or read the officer’s replacement offer

French offer · Officer

Je comprends. Vous voulez un duplicata ?

English meaning: I understand. Do you want a duplicate?

Your next speaking turn: you want that replacement, and the need is urgent in this scene. Request it by replying to the officer’s offer. Leave the student’s reply hidden until you have spoken.

Reveal the student’s replacement reply after your attempt

French reply · Student

Oui, s'il vous plaît. C'est urgent.

English meaning: Yes, please. It’s urgent.

Identify the student’s request without turning urgency into a processing promise.

Hear or read the officer’s form instruction

French instruction · Officer

D'accord. Remplissez ce formulaire.

English meaning: Okay. Fill out this form.

Ce formulaire refers to the form in the practice scene. No real replacement application is submitted through this webpage.

Practise scene 2: ask about the fee and payment

Start the second scene with a new question.

Your speaking turn: ask whether there is a fee before opening the question model. Then hear the officer’s reply and identify the details it supplies.

Reveal the student’s fee question after your attempt

French question · Student

Y a-t-il des frais pour le duplicata ?

English meaning: Is there a fee for the replacement card?

Hear or read the officer’s fee and payment reply

French reply · Officer

Oui. Vous pouvez payer par carte.

English meaning: Yes. You can pay by card.

Keep a payment method separate from an amount or a completed payment.

Ask about processing time, then understand the reply

Your speaking turn: ask how long processing usually takes. Try the question with the student model closed.

Reveal the student’s processing-time question after your attempt

French question · Student

D'accord. Quel est le délai habituel ?

English meaning: Okay. What is the usual processing time?

Hear or read the officer’s readiness-message reply

French reply · Officer

Vous recevrez un message quand la carte sera prête.

English meaning: You will receive a message when the card is ready.

Identify the notification condition and the details still missing.

Native Pause keeps your place. Closing a model rewinds its audio; starting another stops and rewinds the previous clip. The checks assess selected meanings. They do not record, evaluate your spoken reply, process a card request or mark an App mission complete.

Understand the request and the readiness condition

J’ai perdu ma carte d’étudiant. explains the problem. In this sentence, ma carte d’étudiant identifies the lost object. The complete model uses perdu after j’ai to describe the loss.

Duplicata here means a replacement copy of that card. Oui, s’il vous plaît. requests the offered replacement because the officer has just asked Vous voulez un duplicata ? Without that offer, the short oui would leave the listener wondering what you are agreeing to.

C’est urgent. tells the officer about the student’s need. It supplies no deadline, and the officer does not promise priority handling in these lines.

In scene 2, payer par carte refers to using a payment card. It does not mean paying with the student card you lost. The reply confirms a fee exists and gives one possible payment method. Its amount remains unknown.

In quand la carte sera prête, quand introduces the future point at which the card is ready. Recevrez means “will receive.” The promised action is receiving a message then; the card’s present readiness, processing duration and collection arrangements remain unreported.

Change one detail in a written-only reply

These additional variations are written-only. The eight players keep their original student-card recordings:

Fictional speaking intentionWritten French and meaning
Explain a lost library cardBonjour, j’ai perdu ma carte de bibliothèque.
Hello, I lost my library card.
Make the replacement request explicitJe voudrais un duplicata, s’il vous plaît.
I would like a replacement copy, please.
Accept the offer without claiming urgencyOui, s’il vous plaît.
Yes, please.

Try the explicit request after your explanation, or use the short reply after a partner offers the replacement. Keep the lost object clear. Changing it to a library card creates a different fictional situation; it supplies no library’s replacement rules.

Follow up on the unanswered details

The processing-time question is valid even though the officer does not answer with a number. You can ask again for the information you need. Rehearse one of these written-only questions:

Missing informationWritten French follow-up and meaning
Fee amountCombien coûte le duplicata ?
How much does the replacement copy cost?
Approximate durationQuel est le délai approximatif ?
What is the approximate processing time?
Collection locationOù pourrai-je récupérer la carte ?
Where will I be able to collect the card?

There are no recorded answers to these variations on this page. The original reply leaves those details open. A partner may invent an answer for a clearly fictional role-play, while keeping it separate from the original eight models.

Use Stop audio and hide all models and repeat each scene. In scene 1, your partner asks whether you want the replacement before you say oui. In scene 2, ask about the fee and usual processing time, then explain what the readiness message actually tells you. Reset practice choices clears the three choices and closes all eight cards.

Continue with Parle’s current administration tasks

The current Explain a situation role-play asks you to explain the lost student card and request a replacement. The Check a procedure role-play practises fees, payment and following the request. In the App, use Course → A2.2 → Study and administration.

This webpage is free. The App’s Study and administration unit is Premium. All 35 Sounds and the first four First Contact missions are free; Premium opens the current 120-mission course. Web practice does not save recorded App completion or apply for a real card.

For a separate practical scene, explaining a rental budget and preferred area also practises distinguishing your request from information still missing. If you need to make a call instead, the voicemail exercise helps you give a reason and callback details.
